Introducción
El siguiente volumen es una colección de ensayos escritos como cumplimiento de todos los requisitos para obtener la graduación en la carrera de español en el Departamento de Idiomas y Culturas de la Universidad de Drake en Des Moines, Iowa, EEUU. En este primer volumen se pueden identificar ocho trabajos agrupados en cuatro temas principales a saber: Conflictos, Negocios, Educación, y Salud.
El primer grupo, Conflictos, comprende tres análisis que describen la situación de identidad nacional en el Caribe, la independencia regional en España, y las alineaciones artístico-políticas durante la Guerra Civil Española. En el ensayo “Todos somos culpables de las violaciones de los derechos humanos: una mirada a las raíces del conflicto en las fronteras Belice-Guatemala y Haití-República Dominicana”, Arkena trata de persuadir al lector en la toma de conciencia y responsabilidad global que se tiene de los conflictos territoriales y políticos entre esos países del Caribe continental e insular. Kerr, en su trabajo “La lucha por la independencia de Cataluña” describe la importancia de que Cataluña sea una región independiente de España. Garrigan en su ensayo “La guerra, el surrealismo y las políticas: El arte antifascista de Salvador Dalí” explica la falta de evidencia la acusación que se hace a Dalí de mostrar a través de su obra una simpatía con los nazis.
El segundo grupo, Negocios, comprende dos ensayos analíticos de la situación de las entidades sin fines de lucro en México y España, y el entorno laboral que experimentan los migrantes mexicanos en los Estados Unidos. Kaetterhenry en su ensayo “El equilibrio crítico para instituciones mexicanas sin fines de lucro” usa su experiencia mientras estudio en México y España. Huss for su lado, en su trabajo “Las experiencias de migrantes y los riesgos en su mundo laboral en los Estados Unidos” usa también sus observaciones entre migrantes en Guadalajara, México.
El tercer grupo, Educación, se constituye de dos ensayos en los que se discute la importancia de entrenar a los maestros de escuela primaria y secundaria acerca del tratamiento que se debe dar a los estudiantes que pertenecen a un grupo lingüístico minoritario. Plath en “La gestión del aula y las barreras educativas para los estudiantes hispanohablantes” con los estudiantes latinos en los EEUU, y Solberg en su ensayo, “Las jerarquías y la educación: Cómo funciona el sistema educativo en Perú” con los estudiantes quechuas en Perú.
Finalmente en el tema de la salud, Nathan escribe “Una Comparación de las Barreras de Atención Médica Para Hispanos en los Estados Unidos, México y Iowa” para hacer un análisis de la situación de los servicios de salud a los que están acostumbrados los mexicanos en Mexico contrastando con los servicios de salud para inmigrantes en los EEUU.
Introduction
The essays collected here were written by senior college students to meet the requirements for the Bachelors degree in Spanish in the Department of Languages and Cultures at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, USA. This first volume includes eight essays grouped in four themes: Conflicts, Business, Education, and Health.
The first group, Conflicts, comprises three analytical works on national identity in the Caribbean, regional independence in Spain, and artistic-political alignments during the Spanish Civil War. In the essay “We are All Guilty of Human Rights Violations: A Look at the Roots of the Conflict on the Belize-Guatemala and Haiti-Dominican Republic Borders,” Arkena aims to persuade the reader to become aware of the global responsibility that individuals have regarding the territorial and political conflicts between countries of the continental and insular Caribbean region. Kerr, in her work “The Struggle for the Independence of Catalonia” describes the importance and economic, social and political implications of Catalonia being an independent region of Spain. In Garrigan’s essay “War, Surrealism and Politics: The Anti-Fascist Art of Salvador Dalí,” the author explains the unfounded claims made against Dalí of showing sympathy with the Nazis through his work.
The second group on Business includes two essays, one on the situation of non-profit entities in Mexico and Spain, and another on the work environment experienced by Mexican migrants in the United States. In Kaetterhenry’s essay, “The Critical Equilibrium for Mexican Non-Profit Institutions,” the author draws from experience while studying in Mexico and Spain. Similarly, the essay by Huss entitled “The Experiences of Migrants and the Risks in Their Work Situation in the United States” also uses the author’s first-hand knowledge and observations among transient migrants in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The third theme on Education is comprised of two essays that discuss the importance of training primary and secondary school teachers about the treatment that should be given to students who belong to a minority linguistic group. In “Classroom Management and Educational Barriers for Spanish-Speaking Students,” Plath advocates for Latino students in the US, and Solberg’s essay, “Hierarchies and Education: How the Educational System in Peru Works” focuses her analysis on indigenous Quechua students in Peru.
Finally, on the theme of health, Nathan writes “A Comparison of the Barriers to Medical Care for Hispanics in the United States, Mexico, and Iowa,” analyzing health services that Mexicans are accustomed to in Mexico and contrasting that with the health services that many Mexican immigrants receive in the US.
